In April 2015, Nepal faced the worst earthquake in 80 years, causing the deaths of 10,000 people, making thousands of victims homeless, while destroying countless houses and historic buildings.
The film „After Shangrila“ follows 5 young Nepalese men and women in their early 20s. All of them grew up in Shangrila Orphanage Home. Now that they are adults they are trying to build up their country and careers as well as start families of their own. In the documentary the young adults reflect on their time as little children growing up in an orphanage and the difficulties they had to face during and after the earthquake.
The film depicts the challenges of reconstruction in a geographically difficult environment and asks whether sustainable development aid coming from abroad does actually work. Contradictions and problems that arise with foreign development aid become visible on construction sites in rural Nepal. However, the film casts a bright light on the opportunities poor children have despite their underprivileged background. The support they received over many years gave them the chance to grow up into personalities who can actively create their own destiny.

Im April 2015 ereignete sich in Nepal das schwerste Erdbeben seit über 80 Jahren. 10.000 Menschen starben, hunderttausende wurden obdachlos, unzählige Häuser und historische Bauten wurden zerstört.
Der Film „After Shangrila“ begleitet 5 junge Nepalesinnen und Nepalesen Anfang 20 beim Wiederaufbau in ihrem Land. Alle wuchsen im Shangrila Waisenhaus auf und engagieren sich jetzt selbst, um Menschen in Nepal zu helfen. Im Film reflektieren die jungen Erwachsenen über ihre Zeit im Waisenhaus, ihre Vergangenheit und über die Schwierigkeiten nach dem Erdbeben.
Der Film zeigt die Herausforderungen, die der Wiederaufbau in einem geografisch schwierigen Land wie Nepal mit sich bringt und und fragt auch, inwieweit Entwicklungshilfe aus dem Ausland funktionieren kann. Vor allem aber zeigen die 5 jungen Nepalesen und Nepalesinnen durch ihre Lebensgeschichten, was aus Kindern aus benachteiligten Lebenssituationen werden kann, man man ihnen Bildung, Unterstützung und Möglichkeiten der Selbstentfaltung zukommen lässt und wie sie ihr Schicksal selbst in die Hand nehmen.
